Former Springbok winger Bryan Habana has highlighted the disparity in disciplinary punishments for comparable offenses in rugby, criticizing the inconsistency in the decision-making process.
The recent case involving France flanker Oscar Jegou and Springbok icon Eben Etzebeth has drawn attention to the differing sanctions handed down for incidents involving contact with an opponent's eye, with an eight-week discrepancy in bans.
Eben Etzebeth was previously given a 12-match suspension for a similar offense, which was deemed appropriate. However, the four-week ban imposed on Jegou for a comparable act raised eyebrows in the rugby community.
The justification behind Jegou's reduced ban was attributed to the panel categorizing his actions as 'reckless,' leading to a lower starting point for the penalty. Despite this explanation, Bryan Habana expressed frustration over the significant disparity in sanctions for the same type of offense, labeling the situation as 'farcical.'
