The Crusaders rugby team has made the difficult decision to retire their beloved cavalry of mascot knights and horses after 30 years, due to safety concerns at their new stadium in Christchurch.

The Crusaders have announced the retirement of their iconic team of six horses and knights who have been a staple at their matches for three decades.

The decision to bid farewell to the beloved mascots was made in light of safety considerations at the team's new stadium in Christchurch, leading to their exclusion from matchday festivities for the upcoming games.

The Crusaders' chief executive, Colin Mansbridge, expressed the emotional significance of the horses to the team and fans, noting the unique atmosphere they brought to the games.

The retirement comes as the Crusaders prepare to move to the new 30,000-seat One New Zealand Stadium, leaving behind their original home of Lancaster Park which was damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Despite efforts to accommodate the horses in the new venue, safety constraints led to the difficult decision to retire them from matchday appearances.

Mark Donald, who leads the riding group, shared the team's devastation at the news, highlighting the deep connection between the riders, horses, and the Crusaders.

The horses made their final appearance on April 3, marking the end of an era for these beloved mascots in Crusaders history.
