A tragic incident unfolded after the Springbok Test at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, resulting in the death of a man who fell into an open excavation at Lynnwood Road and Roper Street in Brooklyn.
The man, believed to be middle-aged, suffered fatal head injuries after plummeting into the excavation following the Nations Championship match against Scotland.
Despite the efforts of bystanders and emergency responders, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The rescue operation was further complicated by three other incidents in the vicinity, highlighting the inherent risks associated with the inadequately secured construction site.
Safety concerns were raised by the Old East Safety Forum, pointing out deficiencies in safety measures surrounding the excavation and poor visibility for pedestrians leaving the stadium after dark.
Multiple agencies, including emergency services, police, and community responders, were involved in the response to the tragic event, sparking a critical examination of safety protocols around construction sites during major sports events.
