Nicolaas Burgert 'Calla' Scholtz, a revered former rugby player, is currently entangled in legal proceedings over accusations of violating a domestic protection order.
Scholtz, known for his remarkable career during Western Province's dominant 1980s era, where they clinched five consecutive Currie Cup titles, was taken into custody by the authorities.
The 66-year-old faced his initial court appearance recently. The National Prosecuting Authority disclosed that Scholtz will have a formal bail application heard after the initial court session.
This is not the first time Scholtz has found himself in legal trouble, as he made news in 2016 due to an abalone seizure at his property. However, he managed to prove that he was not directly involved in the incident.
Despite his past accolades in rugby, including being a standout player during the 1985 Springbok internal tour and winning SA Rugby's Men's Player of the Year in 1988, Scholtz now awaits the court's decision on his bail application.
