Legendary former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar received a prestigious honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg as part of the institution's 2026 graduation series.
The university hailed Pienaar as a 'nation builder' for his remarkable leadership that symbolized national unity following the Springboks' triumph in the 1995 World Cup held in South Africa.
In his emotional acceptance speech, Pienaar expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received and credited his success to the guidance of his mentors, including 1995 coach Kitch Christie and the late President Nelson Mandela.
Since retiring from international rugby in 1996, Pienaar has continued to make an impact in sports, broadcasting, and business, notably through initiatives promoting youth development and academic excellence.
