Aden McCarthy has made history, though not the kind he might have hoped for, as the first South African to receive a red card in the UEFA Champions League.
The 22-year-old defender from Sabah FK was sent off during a match against Viking, which ended with a 4-1 loss for the Azerbaijani team. Initially shown a yellow, the decision turned red following a VAR check.
Despite this setback, McCarthy's performance since moving from Kaizer Chiefs to Sabah FK has been notable, with his recent achievements including scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal in front of his father, ex-Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy.
Since his transition to Europe, McCarthy has been a standout performer, debuting in the prestigious competition against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Currently, despite the Champions League challenges, Sabah FK sits atop the Azerbaijan Premier League. However, their chances of advancing in UEFA look slim.
